Waiting [Jan. 16th, 2004|08:00 pm]
[mood |Impatient]
[music |Eliza Carthy: Worcester city]

*drums fingers on table*

I have lots of pharmacology work to do and I can't finish it until someone I'm working with e-mails me with what they've done. And they haven't. They've done the work, but I don't have a copy. Doing a dissertation in pairs is such a stupid idea anyway.

Ok,ranting over. Guess I'll just have to do physiology revision instead...

On a slightly brighter note, dinner tonight was really good. Prawn curry, rice, poddadoms and fruit salad. Probably the best one they've made yet (which judging by some of them isn't saying much!)

I was looking through a list of BBC radio collection tapes of the various dramatised books they've done and discovered there was on of Gormenghast. As I didn't know it existed I read the information about it. It was made in 1985 and Steerpike (my favourite character) is played by...Sting!

[info]queeniefox, is this further evidence for our conspiracy theory? Playing an secretive, evil-genius type character could have been valuble training for...whatever it is they're trying to do!

Sadly the said recording is not currently available, but if I ever see it I will buy it, just out of pure curiosity. And disbelief.

Descision time [Jan. 14th, 2004|01:29 pm]
[mood |relievedrelieved]

At the start of this week posters and leaflets started appearing to tell us that accomodation for next year has to be thought about soon. Since I don't spent much time with the other people on my floor and am otherwise friends with random individuals, people from my course or older students who have houses already I've been dreading having to decide who to share with. However, I now have one definite person and a few other possibles.

This arose from a comversation with Claire, a girl from the explorers (walking) club, conducted whilst hurrying to a bus stop at 23:30 yesterday;

'Have you sorted out accomodation for next year yet?'

'No, don't even know who I'm sharing with'

'Me neither'

'Shall we share then?'

'Yeah, OK. Well, that's two people anyway!'

Simple as that.
We get on really well and I'm sure it'll work out fine, whoever else we end up with. Also, virtually all the student houses are closer to the university than the halls so the long walks first thing in the morning will be a thing of the past!

[music |Radio...er...not sure what station]

There's been a scanner sitting in my desk drawer since september. I finally used it today. The icon is a small part of the first scanned picture. Hopefully better and more interesting ones to follow.

The exams are over.

Well, sort of.

One of them never really happened. The fire alarm (which is deafening) went off halfway through and rather than being told to stand all together and not talk we were allowed to wander around chatting for the twenty minutes we were outside. Only afterwards did someone realise this meant we could've gone and looked up all the answers so we couldn't now sit the exam.

Theree doesn't seem to be any kind of contingency plan to deal with an exam being interrupted like this. I recieved an e-mail last night saying something to the effect of 'We don't know what to of about this so we'll decide next week'.

Organisation: 1/10

Wednesday-must be Bristol [Jan. 7th, 2004|10:24 pm]
I'm resisting the temptation to say, 'Well, I'm back', but the fact is that I am. Actually I got here yesterday but they kept swithing off the power so I didn't dare turn on the computer. The point of coming back here three days early is to try and get some (or hopefully lots) of uninterrupted revision done for fridays three(!!) exams. This is Not Fair since not everyone has exams now.

It's very quiet here, which is quite nice in a way, if a little odd. I reckon there's probably 50 people in the whole of the hall and there were less yesterday. Still lots of maintenence work going on though-woke up to hammering this morning.

Christmas was...Christmas. Nothing very unusual except our oven chose to pack up completely on christmas day morning, resulting in pieces of grilled turkey, boiled potatoes and the strangest looking apple crumble I've ever seen.

On new year's eve we visited my Granny early in the day but went back to her house after she'd left for a hogmanay party, hid there until midnight then went round to where the party was so we could 'first foot'. Everyone was really suprised, which was great. You're supposed to take coal and something to drink when you do that but we didn't.

RotK was by far the best of the three films. I've now seen it twice and will probably write more about it sometime. I think it may even have persuaded Mum to read the book!

Flying Visit [Dec. 22nd, 2003|04:33 pm]
No time to write anything sensible or interesting only

1) Durham is cold
2) RotK was amazing, they somehow managed to skip about 5 chapters worth of story without spoiling it!
3) The church where the school carol service was almost caught fire because there were too many candles (flames leaping several feet up the windows etc.)
4) Ayumi is staying with us (that's why I'm in the library, to let her check her email) and is going to make us sushi tonight!

Merry Christmas!

[music |None, I just locked my CD player in a cupboard]

Today is the last day of term.In about four hours I should actually be heading home *crosses fingers*

We had a party-ish thing on our floor last night with nativity fancy dress theme. We drew lots for who dressed as what. I was the donkey. The cardboard ears were fun to make but kept falling off. Luckily I remembered to remove the tail from my jeans before breakfast this morning. We watched Monsters Inc. which I'd not seen before. It was really funny and both the dinosaur from Toy Story and the fish from Finding Nemo appear in it. Even though the latter was released after Monsters Inc!

So far the plan for the holidays involves going to Durham to visit [info]queeniefox on monday and Ayumi, my neighbour in hall, coming to stay with me on the 20th. I don't know how often I'll be able to update in the next few week as there's no internet at home. I do live directly opposite a library though so it shouldn't be too difficult to get to a computer.

Counting down. To lots of things. [Dec. 10th, 2003|10:00 pm]
[mood |hopefulhopeful]
[music |Britten: A Ceremony of Carols]

Went into town with Jade and Beth this afternoon and so failed once again to do any work. Managed to get a bus ticket to Durham on monday, though, and a couple more presents.

My parents have informed me that it is now almost possible to get into my bedroom, which has been full of debris from the spare bedroom for a very long time. This is certainly a good thing since I'm now going home on friday rather than saturday. It's strange, I've not felt like I wanted to go home for most of the term but now that it's close to going back I'm quite impatient to get there. 2 more days.

And of course RotK to look forward to too. 8 days.

Last night was supposed to be a sort of folk club christmas gathering but because it was on an unusual night very few people were able to come so the room we'd booked was unnecessarily large. We ended up singing a few carols and silly songs and just chatting. Unfotunately their main christmas (officially winter solstice) party thing takes place on 20th december, in a cave! I'm sorry to be missing this, mainly through curiosity as to where in Bristol you'd find a cave large enough for a party!?

I suspect that the hall food budget has now run out because there hasn't been fruit or any other extras available for several days now and mince has become prevelant in the dinners. Not that there's anything wrong with mince generally, it's just that the mince here isn't very nice.

Christmas is coming... [Dec. 8th, 2003|04:34 pm]
[mood |christmassy]
[music |General computer room babble]

After a few failed attempts I actually got some presents today. I've now bought four. Unfortunately I also ended up with two things for myself-but considering that I discovered a very cool Christmas market and the Bristol branch of Forbidden Planet that's not too bad!

There's a street called Christmas Steps which has now stopped sounding silly. It's a great name for about a month. It does have probably the most interesting decorations on it. Most of the lights etc. in the city centre are so tasteful they're not even christmassy! It's all pale blue and white lights and lots of oh-so-civilised fake fir-tree stuff. Very pretty but now very cheerful. A far cry from the garish colours and disney tableaus in Leicester.

There was a hall ball on saturday that I didn't go to (went to a party instead). This seems to have been a good descision as it turns out that the people I would've gone with left at about 10 cos one of them was ill, so they really didn't have a good night. That's not supposed to sound as if I didn't want them to have a good time, of course I did. It's just that the ball never really appealed to me so I'm glad I didn't go along just to try to be sociable.

The formal dinner is tonight, though. There's not quite enough time to get from orchestra to the halls in time but they always spend ages messing about and handing out bread rolls or sherry at things like that so it should be ok.

[music |Steeleye span: Sir James the Rose]

This is a song that i used to sing with Chanterelles choir. It's supposed to be funny (and when it's sung, it is) and the tune by Mendelsson that's played at weddings is whisteled in between verses.

I was at a christmas party last night and coincidentally found someone else who knew it, which I'm sure is highly improbable. Anyway, we subjected everyone to an impromptu performance...
The Goslings )

That probably sounds really sick written down but it always got a laugh with chanterelles. And it certainly go a laugh last night!

Ahem, moving swiftly on. I've discovered that all three of my exams re on the same day.

So I have five and a half hours of exams on january 9th. What a way to start the year.

I can't work out how much detail we need to know stuff in. The holidays are just going to have to be spent revising. All the time.

But the holidays are soon, that's the point. *cheers*
